Attractive Mega Cities

Attractive Mega Cities

The cities of today and the cities of tomorrow are being built all over the world. Some completely without afterthought and some go all in with tech, ecological sustainability and future foresight. Still almost every one of them lacks both design thinking in Beauty and Social Collision Density. What can we do about that?

Mystic

What We Create – Create Us Back

With so many people living and moving into cities now and in the future, it’s a shame that so many cities are downright ugly.

Yes! Beauty of cities are not luck, nor in the eye of the beholder. Alain de Botton and the School of Life has put together an excellent guide to how we build beautiful cities. Many of our most beautiful cities were built during the renaissance. And it didn’t happen by accident. For them it was a philosophical mission. They knew that everything around us affect us and to get better citizens we have to put them in a better environment.

It is called Ontological Design – Everything we design, build and create -In turn design us back 🙂

So yes, we know how to do it, and yes, we can do it in modern times as well.

The challenge is 2 things:

  1. The intellectual confusion around beauty
  2. Lack of political will

Intellectual cunfussion

Beauty –
And The Intellectual Confusion Around It

We all now an ugly cities when we see it. And we all know a beautiful and attractive city when we see it as well. We even have scientific tourist data to support this claim.

Successful urbanism is never an accident
For the Renaissance it was a philosophical mission – Alain De Botton

The School of Life as put forth 6 things that we know makes a city attractive :

  1. Order and Variety
  2. Life on the streets
  3. Compact
  4. Orientation and Mystery
  5. The right scale
  6. Make it local

I highly recommend watching the entire clip and listen to Alain explain all of the 6 factors.

How to make an attractive city

Political will

The second obstacle is the political will to set at rules and regulations to stop disastrous commercial developers, to get free hands on how to do things without too much afterthought at all. They all need a strong firm guidance in how they build properties that will make a city beautiful.

Our Cities has always been about glorifying the center of power. From the Temples and Castles of the olden world to today’s modern religious temples, our Towers of Capitalism, that in most cases are both alienating and ugly.

What will our temples of tomorrow look like and can we make them beautiful and inviting for all citizens?

We can make this happen. It is our cities. We all benefit from having beautiful cities from personal wellbeing to a flourishing tourist economy and a booming creative connection economy.

Mega Cities and The Connection Economy

And as we head into the future it becomes ever more apparent, that the emerging connected Mega Cites is the way many of us will live in. And then it also becomes ever more important who can build the coolest and most beautiful Mega Cities to live in. Both making the many smaller cities, that makes up one Mega City, more beautiful and making all the infrastructure, that connects them and resides in them, more beautiful as well.

The one who speaks best for that is Parag Khanna in the excellent talk at The RSA: Connectivity Is Destiny. We need to build more infrastructure and connections in and in-between our cities. Nations and borders won’t define our future. Connections and Mega-Cities will.

And let’s not forget to make all the infrastructure Beautiful as well!

Then we should really take on the responsibility to make it A New Renaissance in creating and build our future homes here on Spaceship Earth.

Thanks to Science Fiction and things like the Venus Project, we have been promised the cities in the future will look really cool indeed. Still I see new building being built all over Sweden looking really ugly or boring. Something must be done. And it is not just that. We have to design our cities to live in them for a creative future as well. One thing to take in mind is a thing called Collision Density.

Collision Density

To make our Cities and Mega Cities thriving in the future we have to take into account something called Collision Density. Something that several European Cities has going for the already like London, Barcelona and Berlin. It’s where there are dense creative city centers with lots of walkable areas and natural meeting points. Where creative people of the future like Artists, Thinkers, Entrepreneurs, Freelancers, Makers, Dreamers and World Changers can bump into each others both serendipitously and at lots of creative events.

This is easily done with lots of co-working places and enabling lots of cool meetups and events.

Bubbles and Cross-Fertilisation

It’s important that people can meet and get together both inside their own sphere of interest and outside it. It can be their profession or the hobbies or common interest in some form of Art, Culture, Game or Fitness that unites them. So it is possible to get this going even in smaller cities if there are strong communal breeding ground for some niches.

But at the same time is also important that the city design enables intertwingle between several bubbles to enable Cross-Fertilization and avoid group-think and stagnation. And that infrastructure enable fast, cheap and easy access between the cities that makes up a Mega City, so that people easily can visit other spheres of interest that aren’t local.

I would go as far as to say that make traveling between cities free or almost free using sustainable infrastructure.

So design Cities and Mega Cities that enable Collision Density, Easy Travel and Cross-Fertilisation.

Tomorrowland And The Renaissance

Do we want to live in cities that looks like the one in my favorit movie Tomorrowland or do we want some modern version of the beautiful stone Renaissance cities? Or some form of unholy mix?

Tomorrowland

City Of Tomorrowland

It is clear that we are lagging behind in making beautiful and sustainable cities of both today and tomorrow.

Let us change that!

The Old Fear Economy vs The New Connection Economy

As I write this I’m stuck on the London Express bus going into London from Stansted. We have been stuck in traffic for an hour now. The is bus sitting there right next to the pavement. We have been talking to the bus driver about letting us of the bus. He says he can’t because there is camera in the bus watching him and he will lose his job if he do.

The irony in all this is the reason I’m here in London in the first place. I’m here to watch Seth Godin talk tomorrow at Imperial Collage. Seth is a big speaker of the effects of leaving the old industrial economy and entering the new connection economy. In this old economy fear has been used just like this. To keep workers in place to keep them from caring.

I get that the rule is there for our safety. So that we don’t get of in the middle of the road. So that the company can’t be hold accountable in case of an accident. In this case it would of course be totally risk free. Still it’s not a decision a mer grunt can make on his own. Fear and rules keep everyone in place.

Tomorrow I will take part with many others in acting out what we can do in this revolution in making a better society. We will be meeting Seth Godin together with many peers. Among them is Helena Roth who is the one who made me come here to London to see Seth in the first placed. She took another flight and is now waiting for me at our AirBnb home here in London.

A foggy trip into a beautiful London

Helena and I are also taking a big MOOC from MITx together called Transforming Business, Society and Self. An online course about the very same thing. It’s about a new way in acting together to create a better world. Read more about it here: Transforming Business, Society and Self.
I, for one, welcome this new Connection economy. Can I please get of the bus and walk now?

Bikes vs. Cars

I’m a biker. And I have been so for my entire life. I live for biking around in the spring, summer and fall. Not so much in the winter as I live in Sweden. Still, I do commuting by bike in the winter but not the pleasure kind of riding. I like riding by the sea with no particular goal in mind. So it’s with great pleasure I attend events like this one tonight. I also want you to watch the movie Premium Rush. There are lots of movies out there that celebrate cars and driving like The Fast and The Furious but few movies like this one that involves both bikes and action in a realistic way.

I have also been attending Johan Lange’s and his LUCKc breakfast in Varberg this morning. Johan is one of the greatest consultant out there who get how we humans work and helps leaders and companies with his insights into modern leadership.

I also talk about it in Swedish in my pod here: Bikes vs Cars and LUCKc breakfast.

Trying out the a new Electric Bike

Trying out the a new Electric Bike

Doc Lounge Varberg – Biking For The Future

Tonight was a special night here in Varberg. First we was treated with great Bike Trail show by Martin Kleivard and the opportunity to try som new electric bikes from Cressent. These bikes were much better designed and better performance than previous bikes I have tried. Really nice handling and could take curves better.

Tony Grimaldi

Tony Grimaldi

Tony Grimaldi gave a speech about wanting to make Varberg a better bike city. I agree. With the increased range and speed for ordinary commuting with this new types of electric bikes there is much greater opportunity to go for a biking city. Many larger cities in Europe like Copenhagen and Amsterdam has already done it. So the only thing lacking in smaller cities with much shorter distances are the political will to do it.

Bike vs. Cars

After a great mingle it was time for the main event for Doc Lounge Varberg, the movie Bikes vs. Cars. It was an interesting movie who started out portraying the history of biking and cars in Los Angeles and São Paulo. The we get comparison with Copenhagen where over 40% of the population commute by bike. And this is in a Nordic country with nordic winters as well.

The movie gives a great overview of the commuting problems we are faced with today and in the future as urbanisation of all our cities are increasing with an exponential rate. This is one of our largest challenges as we spend an enormous amount of energy, earth natural resources and time commuting all over the world. It’s a gigantic industry that is ripe for disruption.

Håkan Cullberg talks about Varbergs new city planing

My Friend Håkan Cullberg was also there tonight giving a short insight into what Varberg’s new city might look like and what we want to do for all bike riders here.

All we know about the future of Varberg is that it won’t look like this

Get Ready for the Disruption

The mornings meet-up with Johan Lange was also a great experience. We had a long conversation about the disruption that the shift to the Connection Economy will bring with is. Many people already get it but many people are still lagging behind in the thinking.

Together with Kjell and Issan we also talk about what format is the best to publish our books in. I’m going to go with a small handbook type format with my books and we thought that Johan should go with it as well for his sum of the LUCK-concept.

So can we combine the quest for human wellbeing and activities like biking a new way to think and see the world?

Think Big! Be Nice! Have Bold Visions of the Future!

I have been listing to 3 very inspiring women. Frida BoisenElaine EksvärdDarja Isaksson. It was all under the combined meet-up of IT-Solutions Expo and HR Summit Väst. They all gave 3 different views on the society, that is toppling the old industrialised economy. It’s called The Connection Economy. In a way it has always been about who you knew in the old society too. The difference was that it was only available to a selected few, who was in the right circles and that did know who to make friends with. Now with the power of the digital dimension and an emerging number of people who has studied both old and modern knowledge and science, there is paradigm shift already on the way.

So in honor of the 2015 International Women’s Day  theme “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!” I give you:

@fridaboisen [Frida Boisen] – Social Ninja – Be Nice

Frida gives a very interesting and funny talk about her experience as Editor-in-chief at GT. She gives us 10 things about then going online.

Is Viral important? Can we only reach impact if we go viral? Both yes and no. Viral is important to get reach. On the other hand getting real connection with people one on one is now more possible, quicker and easier than ever before. It all depends on your message and your agenda.

The one thing to think about: Use your comedic talent. On the web and in presentation and talks. Humor always has a way to get into your heart. And satire has proven again and again through the ages to be a very effective tool to put the spotlight on anything fishy in society.

Frida Boisen

Frida Boisen –  What is in your heart?

Ask yourself: What is in your heart?

1. Spread love not hate online
Touch someone. Reach out. Be honest and real. All people have a heart to get through to.

2. Tell it first
In a way we humans always look to someone who is the fastest to deliver important news.

3. Tell it best
If you are not first to say something then say it better

4. Like and share
Be generous. All of us likes kindness
Use congratulations [Grattiseffekten]. We all know how good it feels to be flooded with kind words on our birthday or another important day on Facebook.

5. Connect first
Show someone you care about them. Tell them what you feel. Be then one who reaches out and shows initiative.

6. Join in on popular conversations and Hashtags
Be where the heat is.

7. Ping people.
Lift them up. Don’t gossip about them. Everyone likes be thought about in a good way.

8. Find your audience
Find your tribe. The Long Tail is becoming true. If Your trying to please everyone you will end up pleasing no one.

9. Replay back
Follow back. Don’t feed the trolls. Be active in constructive conversations.

10. Look after your brand
Be positive. Talk about your successes.

We must never accept online-hatred and Toxicness. We must talk about what Code of Conduct we use both online and in the flesh. It’s never okay do harm to one another.

Laugh at the trolls
1. Start a fire. Find your values. Talk to the heart.
2. Be top of mind. Follow! Like! Be generous, be everywhere.
3. Chose a small arena. Use micro targeting. Visit a Café.

Be bold. Be Daring. Be Vulnerable
Think Big. Tell Stories. Share Your Vision.
It’s Your Turn!

@ElaineEksvard [Elaine Eksvärd] – Rhetoric Ninja – Train Your Communication Skills

Elaine has so much to say on how we communicate in todays society. I’ll sum up below some of her important points.

Use the first 90 seconds of any encounter to define and make sure everyone you meet get the right picture of you and not a internal one filled with clichés and preconceptions. This is especially important for people like me who have chosen to wear my residual self image full out in the flesh of “The Matrix”.

Lord Sillion and Elaine Eksvärd

Lord Sillion and Elaine Eksvärd – Connect to people

Communication is a skill and muscle that you must train every day.

Think about how you sound and what tonality you are using.

What is your posture and what body language are you using. If you don’t know, find out.

When someone are trying to portray their thoughts and opinions as facts there is an easy way to disarm them. Just say: Oh, that’s how you are felling? [Jasså, så känner du?] 🙂

Words and communication are power and we all need/want more influence (power).
So keep practicing your skills.

Get more social power and influence!

1. You have more power.
2. You can get more power.
3. Much More!

Be nice! Be vulnerable!

And do plant a dream in every child you meet!

@darjaisaksson [Darja Isaksson] – Digital Ninja – Join The Digital Dimension

Darja is a new friend of mine that have met threw the new networked society. She raises some very thoughtful ideas about the present and the future. Things we all need to act or react to in one way or another. Or passively not at all. It’s choice we make. Adapt or surfer the consequences.

The World has changed forever. We are now in a new Communication revolution. The transition to the relation and connection economy. A participatory culture.

Darja Isaksson - The Future doesn't slow down

Darja Isaksson – The Future doesn’t slow down

The ability to write down and share our thoughts has never been greater and the need has never been more dire. We are face with some enormous challenges as a human race and the better and faster we start collaborate around new ideas the better chance we have in solving them. With all the new technology we have today we great opportunity to be active members of creative society. It’s like Matthew Taylor say in his spectacular adress last year. Every citizen has the #PowerToCreate.

Our expectations evolve with an ever faster tech explosion.
Get ahead of the curve!

We want frictionless
We also want experiences

Visual consumption has started to affect our behaviours
Blogs are the new stores.
Both Physical and Online Merged in a great way are the winners

What happens all products have their own soundtrack?

We must talk about the future like never before
We must own the present and have bold visions for the future

Many companies under-deliver about our expectations and the possibilities.
Are you one of them?

Do you know your customer?
Do you have speed?

Ruckusmaker Day

In honor of the 60th birthday of Steve Jobs on February 24th we celebrate what Seth Godin calls #RuckusmakerDay. That means you should do something out of the ordinary. Connect with someone, share your thoughts in a blog. Don’t just share a story. Make a story worth sharing. What Navid Modiri calls #storydoers. Here in Varberg we want to make change with #VarbergCalling for peace with Empathy, Creativity and Innovation. On 24th February I will hold a quick workshop in how to make change using Social Media in Varberg during Open Call. And I will attend an Entrepreneur meet-up to help other entrepreneurs to get up to speed with the connection economy. Steve_Crazy

Make a Ruckus!

Commit to articulating your point of view on one relevant issue, one news story, one personnel issue. Every day. Online or off, doesn’t matter. Share your taste and your perspective with someone who needs to hear it. Speak up. Not just tomorrow, but every day. — Seth Godin

So what does it mean to make a Ruckus? Seth Godin explains it well in his talk at 99u. Making a ruckus means to do something that stands out. Something that might not work and that isn’t for everyone. To make something that would be missed if you didn’t. You do this by surrounding yourself with people who will challenge and inspire you to take your work, your art to the next level. To do something that builds connection so that someone else can use it to tell a story about themselves and the tribe they live in.

On Ruckusmaker Day you are encouraged to speak up, to have an opinion on something you care about. Too often we fall back on other people’s views and actions, we retweet their words and their thoughts – we feel safer riding on someone else’s shoulders.

Why is suddenly okay to do this work, that has never been done before in history? Because now it’s free to fail. With the power of the networked society we can no try something out and iterate or do something new until we succeed. In this paradigm shift to the Connection Economy we can suddenly dance with our fears. Because we are not alone anymore. We can now find our tribe and help each other out. If we make something that someone don’t like we can now say: It’s not for you.

If we are trying to please everyone, we will end up pleasing no one — Seth Godin

Be incredibly generous and connected to a community that will help all of us, to do more and better art.

It’s your turn to:

Ship.
Speak up.
Stand out.
Build a following.
Market a product.
Make a connection.
Solve an interesting problem.
Write, sing, invent, create, ask a question, launch a project, organize a protest, open the door for someone, question authority, make a short film, direct, produce, create or adopt.
Learn a new skill.
Help someone who needs you.

Be missed if you are gone.

[Update]
Here you can see my presentation in Swedish

Prep, Pitch and Pepp

Prep, Pitch and Pepp

Tonight I have been to a meetup with some fellow entrepreneurs that all joined up for a course in running your own business last fall in Varberg, Sweden. We all met up to share our stories and to do some pitching. We also talked about how we should sell ourself, our products and our services. It was all led by the awesome Jannike and Lovisa, who both radiate some much positive energy where ever they go.

Prep [Be Prepared]

When ever you are going to meet someone do your homework before you meet them. Read up on who they are and what they are passionate about. Show them that you are interested in who they are and what they do. Sincerely.

It’s curios that the knowledge of How To Win Fiends And Influence People are still not common knowledge and taught to every child, despite that is almost 80 years ago the Dale Carnage came out with his famous book and that modern science has come so far as to how to build genuine connection between people.

Pitch [Pitch Black or How To Convey Any Message]

We all need to pitch. We need to pitch our ideas to friends and family. We need to pitch our business proposal to potential clients and investors. It can be a short elevator pitch of 20 to 30 seconds. It can be in the more prepared format that some did tonight with a Powerpoint presentation of 7 slides with 30 seconds speaking time each slide totaling 3 min 30 sec. Or it can be longer really prepared pitch running 15-20 minutes with months of research and work behind it. Like the ones that Oren Klaff does.

pitch-anything-2

The Croc Brain [The Lizard Brain – The Resistance]

If we want to pitch anything we must first get our words, pictures and story past the what Oren Klaff calls the Croc Brain and Seth Godin calls the Lizard Brain. We do that by telling an emotional story that resonates with the receiver. Oren Klaff, who is a professional pitcher of the biggest ideas and deals there is, explains this well in his book: Pitch Anything. Or to just get the best part see or listen to this talk between Oren and Chase Jarvis. Even if his cases are bit extreme and most the time a kind of competitive pitching between people who are trying to “win” at any cost, you can still apply most of his thinking to your everyday pitching 🙂

Pepp [And Boost each other]

Then we have what Seth Godin calls the Connection Economy. This is a very deep topic. I sum it up in my blog post. in short it’s about all this things: Trust, Permission, Remarkability, Leadership, Stories that spread, Connection, Compassion, and Humility. We all want to be noticed and feel important. So it’s all about making your customers, your suppliers and your coworkers feel special. We all need to connect more. We also should seek out people who make us feel good and stay away from toxic people who drag us down. It’s what  true what Scott Dinsmore is always talking about in his Live Your Legend Local concept.

“The fastest way to do the things you don’t think can be done is to hang around the people already doing them” – Scott Dinsmore

In honor of that I’m hosting meetups where the main point is to meet up, share our thoughts, ideas and dreams of the future. To pep each other and to hold one another accountable for the plans we all make. Do join us for the next one on February 8th in Varberg. Or do find one in of the other 44 countries all over the world hosting one.

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with - Jim Rohn

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with – Jim Rohn

Selling [Don’t Sell, Make A Connection Instead]

We are all in sales now like Daniel Pink says in his book. But sales does not mean what it used to mean. It’s now more than ever to build a connection with your customer and give them what they need.

And don’t try to please everyone or make a product that everyone will want. Because if you try to do this, you will end up with a service or product that no one needs or wants.

Go Make A Ruckus!

The reason I’m so exited about all this is because they I have just finished Seth Godin’s latest audiobook in a form of a 2 hour compilation from his seminars called Leap First.

What am I Making Then?

I’m finally narrowing down what my art is and what I want to spend my time doing.

I will help people and companies to navigate the connection economy. I will offer to make speeches and workshops on how to best flourish in this modern society. I will help develop ideas, visions and strategies for this networked society.

I will create places and events where people can meet and share knowledge and be creative.

I will give the young so-called Hacker-clubs and Hackathons for us more “adult”.

I want everybody to have a curious mind about the future. And I want to teach people how to become more creative and aware  themself and their environment. That is was my first handbook is about.

Seth Godin about the Connection Economy

I’m a big fan of Seth Godin. I listen to him on a lot of different Podcasts. I have several of his books as audiobooks on Audible. And have seen many of his online talks. Here is one of his best and my notes of it:

 The Notes

Your business idea should involve people needing their friends also using it in some way and talking about it.

You need people to subscribe to your ideas.

There is a story to every brand. What is your brand’s story?

Build a story into the product. So that people can tell it when using the product.

If you are making a product for everyone. You’re making a product for no-one.

Do something that we would miss if you didn’t

The book is just the Wrapper for how the Idea is going to spread
Ideas will spread further and faster than before
Books may go away as Idea-wrapper
If you wrap your Idea in something that can spread. It will spread more easily
If your idea is something that can be talk about. It’s more likely that it will be talked about.

If you are in the business of creating value for everyone you touch. You will never need to look for work again. If you are in the scarcity game you will need ever sharper elbows to get ahead.

When you do work that goes into world and touches people. Then, you are connecting
Would they miss your work if you stopped doing it? Would they miss you? Your work goes beyond Dunbars number.

If you give the A to people who did something with the right intrusion but failed a couple of times. Then they get the message. That Vulnerability is okay. You don’t need to be afraid to try and try again. Persistence and Grit will get you there 🙂

Don’t copy the people we admire but to become the people we admire 🙂
